PhotoBookInfo

Before you send a photo,
check the back first

The date, the device and the location are hidden inside your photo files. We read them only in your browser and make a clean copy on the spot.

  • No uploads
  • No install or sign-up
  • Free

Three steps

  1. Choose a photo

Pick one JPEG, HEIC, PNG or other photo. The file never leaves this device.

  2. See what's hidden

Date taken, camera, whether a location is stored, and signs of editing, at a glance. Coordinates stay hidden until you tap.

  3. Save a clean copy

Save a copy without the location and other details. JPEG and PNG keep their full quality.

Questions

Is my photo really not uploaded?

Yes. The file you choose is read only in your browser's memory. It is not sent to a server or stored on your device. The viewer runs in a separate, locked-down frame with network access blocked, so even the ads on this page can't reach your photo's information.

Close the page or tap "Clear" and what was read is gone.

What information is in a photo?

Most phone and camera photos record the date and time, the device model, lens and exposure settings, and, if location was on, the GPS coordinates of where they were taken. Some also keep the name of the editing app or the author.

Photos also hold a small embedded thumbnail. After cropping, that thumbnail can still show the uncropped picture, so we show it too.

How are coordinates shown?

They are hidden by default and only shown when you tap "Location found". We never call a map or address service on our own.

The "Open in external map" link next to the coordinates opens only when you tap it, and only then are the coordinates sent to Google Maps.

What about photos I got through WhatsApp or social media?

Most messengers and social networks remove metadata when a photo is sent normally, so those photos usually show "no hidden information". Options such as sending as a document or file can keep everything, though. More on messengers.

Does the clean copy lose quality?

JPEG and PNG are not recompressed. Only the information blocks are removed, so the quality matches the original. Hidden data attached after the image, such as a motion photo's video, is cut off too. After saving, we read the copy again to confirm nothing is left.

Other formats such as WebP are redrawn, so they are not identical to the original. Browsers can't re-save HEIC, so use the remove-location option in your phone's photo app, or convert it with HEIC to JPEG.

Can I install it like an app?

Yes. On Android and in desktop Chrome, use the "Install app" button above or the install icon in the address bar. Once installed on Android, PhotoBookInfo appears in your photo app's Share menu, so you can check or convert a photo straight from there.

On iPhone, open this page in Safari and tap Share > Add to Home Screen. The Share menu integration isn't available on iPhone. After the first visit it works without an internet connection.

Which files are supported?

JPEG, HEIC/HEIF, PNG, TIFF, WebP and AVIF photos. Video (MP4, MOV) isn't supported yet; only basic file details are shown. HEIC previews appear only in Safari. To turn HEIC into JPEG, use HEIC to JPEG, which also removes the location.

Why "PhotoBookInfo"?

People used to write the date and place on the back of the prints in their photo books. Digital photos carry the same information inside the file, but it's hard to see what is there. PhotoBookInfo lets you turn over the photos in your own photo book and read the back.

Before you send a photo to anyone, take one look.
