3 Ways to Remove Location from iPhone Photos
When Location Services are on, the iPhone camera saves the coordinates of where each photo was taken. If you send that photo to someone or post it on a marketplace like Facebook Marketplace or eBay, those coordinates can go along with it. Depending on the situation, one of the three methods below will do the job.
1. Remove location only when sharing
This leaves the photo on your phone untouched and strips the location only from the copy you send this time. It's a good choice when you want to keep locations in your own library, for example in a family album.
- In the Photos app, select the photo you want to send. You can select several.
- Tap the Share button in the bottom-left corner.
- At the top of the share sheet, next to the number of selected photos, tap Options.
- Turn off the Location switch and tap Done.
- Send it as usual through Messages, Mail, WhatsApp or any other app.
This setting applies only to that one share. The next time you share, Location starts switched on again, so it's worth making a habit of checking every time.
2. Remove location from photos you already took
If you remove the location from the photo itself, the coordinates won't travel with it no matter how you send it later.
- Open the photo in the Photos app.
- Swipe up, or tap the Info (i) button, to open the details. If you see a map, the photo contains a location.
- Tap Adjust below the map.
- Tap No Location.
If you removed a location by mistake, you can restore the original from the same screen. To change several photos at once, select them and use More (…) > Adjust Location. Menu names may differ slightly between iOS versions.
3. Stop recording location from now on
If you don't need locations in your photos at all, turning off the camera's location permission is the most reliable option.
- Open the Settings app.
- Go to Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera.
- Choose Never.
This only affects photos you take from now on. Photos you already took keep their location, so remove it separately with method 2 if needed.
With location off, new photos won't appear on the Places map in Photos or in location-based Memories.
Common points of confusion
Does the same apply to AirDrop?
Yes. AirDrop goes through the same share sheet, so if you turn off Location under Options, the photo is sent without it. AirDrop sends the photo as the original file, so if you don't turn Location off, the coordinates will almost certainly go with it.
What is "All Photos Data" in the share options?
Below the Location switch you may see an option such as All Photos Data. Turning it on sends more of the original information, such as edit history. Unless the recipient needs to edit the untouched original, it's safer to leave it off.
Do screenshots contain a location?
Screenshots don't record where they were taken. But if a map or an address is visible inside the screenshot, removing metadata won't hide it, so take a look at the image itself too.
My photos are saved as HEIC. Is that a problem?
iPhones save photos in HEIC format by default, and HEIC stores location just like JPEG does. If you often exchange photos with other devices or websites, go to Settings > Camera > Formats and choose Most Compatible; new photos will then be saved as JPEG. For JPEG files, PhotoBookInfo can create a cleaned copy with no loss in quality.
Check that it's gone
Even if you think you removed the location, the only way to be sure is to look inside the actual file. Photos saved as "original" or received from other apps in particular can turn out differently than you expect.
Open the photo in PhotoBookInfo and the summary at the top immediately shows either Location found · tap to show or a No location badge. Your photo never leaves your device. If a location is still there, Save clean copy on the same screen creates a copy without it. Note that browsers can't re-save HEIC, the iPhone's default format, so for HEIC photos use method 1 or 2 above.
Check what your photo is carryingPhotoBookInfo reads photos inside your browser and never uploads them. It tells you if a location is stored and makes a clean copy for you.
